Hello my name is…?!
My friend, Carla, over at All Of Me…Now started a weekly series “Me Before Mom” that I will be taking part in. Writing about myself before I became a Mom seems like a challenge & a lot of fun at the same time! Do I remember that woman?! The fun-loving, care free & super spontaneous me?! I do remember her, I have great memories of my life before I was MOM! It’s only been 3.5 years since I became a Mom….but once you’re a Mom, it’s a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week, 365 days a year way of life! I love my girls, I love being a Mom & wouldn’t change a thing…with that being said, there are those times that I want a glimpse of that other woman, the me I was before I was a Mom. I’m still fun-loving & sometimes spontaneous, with too many cares to be considered care free! This will allow me to explore me & give my girls a glimpse of the woman I was before I was MOM. Here goes…..
Prompt #1: How did you get your name? Did you always love it? Have you ever wanted to change it?
I’ve been with my Mom for a few days on vacation, so I was able to get this straight from the source… My Dad named me Heather before they left the hospital, right before…as in filling out the paperwork & they still hadn’t decided. My parents couldn’t decide on a name for a girl, but had a boy’s name which would have been Robert Michael after my Dad. They would watch the credits of tv shows & movies. Read books about names & watch newscasters names. My Mom wanted Megan, Sarah or Rachel. My Dad wanted Jenna, Jennifer or Allison. When a girl was born that November day, they couldn’t agree on a name. On the last day in the hospital my Dad came in & said “How about Heather?” My Mom immediately thought of the Heather in Scotland & England, a purple flowering shrub…she liked that it evoked a sense of her heritage. I became Heather… Lynn, my middle name, was decided because it sounded good with Heather. That tiny baby girl became Heather Lynn.
I know Heather was a VERY popular name in the late 70′s to 80′s, but I never really came across that many in school or in life. I’ve always liked my name…I can’t imagine being anyone else. I do distinctly remember wishing my name started with a “K” in middle school, because I could make the “K” look pretty when it was capitalized & cursive…not so much with an “H”. If you saw my signature now however, you wouldn’t know what the first letter is!
So there you have it… I’m Heather Lynn & can’t imagine having any other name!

My mom would sing Heather on the hillside, drove me nuts. But then I used to think that anything that was heather gray was made just for me.
Right?! I would always look at the Heather Gray as I color I should buy!

Thanks Michele!!!
I love your name. Funny thing? My parents almost named me Heather, but when I was born, they decided to name me Jacqueline!
Great story. Thanks for sharing. Loving that it evokes thoughts of your heritage. I never put the two together, but now I will every time I hear that name.
Love this series – I hated my name Jennifer because in the 70′s, there were 3 just in my class. haha

Heather is such a pretty name and it is special that it relates to your heritage . I love the flower Heather too, it is cool your mom envisioned those when your dad first brought up your name. Is your favorite color purple by any chance?

I like your name, and your middle name is the same as my sister.
I have to admit I did like the fact that my name started with a K. I like the swoop at the end of the letter. It’s so fun to hear how everyone else got their name!
I love the name Heather! I knew a few Heathers growing up, one of whom I totally looked up to! This has been so fun to read about how everyone got their names.
